English apples, Scottish apples, Welsh apples, Irish apples - there are more than 2000 different varieties of British apples. Here you can find photographs of apple varieties which originated in England and other parts of the British Isles.
Britain has hundreds of apples having a wide range of flavours and textures, shape and size and use. Different apple varieties come into season from late summer to mid-winter. But in the local supermarket, down amongst the Golden Delicious and Granny Smiths from the continent and Galas and Braeburn types from New Zealand and South America you will be lucky to find more than a few old favourite English apples such as Cox and Bramley.

I will try to introduce you to the vast range of wonderful English apples that you can find if you know where to look. The season starts in July and runs right through to the early part of the following year.
Where can you buy these apples? Well, a supermarket is not the best place to look. You will probably find Bramley and Cox and perhaps also Discovery, Worcester and Egremont Russet but nothing else, although Waitrose sometimes have a bigger selection. The places to look are farm shops, farmers markets and fruit growers or perhaps even a local greengrocer if you can still find one. Find them all in a search engine or Yellow Pages.
So, now have a look at what varieties you might find.
